On the occasion of the Year of Nikola Tesla
Stjepan Mesić and Carl-Henric Svanberg visited Ericsson Nikola Tesla

After having participated in the International Scientific and Professional Meeting "The Life and Work of Nikola Tesla" which took place in the Concert Hall "Vatroslav Lisinski", Stjepan Mesić, President of the Republic of Croatia and Carl-Henric Svanberg, Ericsson President and CEO visited the Croatian member of the globally present Ericsson Group, the company Ericsson Nikola Tesla.

The guests were greeted by M. Sc. Gordana Kovačević, president of that company who in her address pointed out that the operation of Ericsson Nikola Tesla is based on the principles that the inventor and scientist Nikola Tesla applied in his work - innovativeness, flexibility and challenging the limits of prevailing trends and truths. The company therefore not only by its name, but also by its way of work promotes the genius of Nikola Tesla in all its activities and in all of its markets. Operating in this way Ericsson Nikola Tesla realizes respectable business results and is a role model in the Croatian business environment, thus satisfying interests of all its stakeholders - employees, shareholders, community and the suppliers and business partners. The biggest Ericsson Nikola Tesla's contribution, however, is the creation of local prerequisites for the operation of big research and development expert centers that employ talented people capable to follow in Tesla's footsteps.

During his repeated visit to Croatia and Ericsson Nikola Tesla Carl-Henric Svanberg spoke about the relevance of the research and development activities for the Ericsson's positioning as the leading global supplier of the cutting edge ICT solutions and services. In his address to journalists the leading man of the Swedish telecom giant pointed out several times the important role that Ericsson Nikola Tesla plays in the Group, particularly within the area of research and development. The company's Research and Development Centre numbers close to six hundred people, with about one fourth of them working in Split. This unit is included in the critical Ericsson's projects, such as the implementation of the solutions for the 21st Century Network based on the Internet protocol into the British Telecom Network. Innovativeness is one of company's competitive advantages which is mirrored in many aspects of its operation, confirmed Svanberg, and the proof of that lies with the new responsibilities that Ericsson Nikola Tesla has within the area of integration and verification services as well as within the area of network signaling.

During the meeting with journalists in the company Ericsson Nikola Tesla President Mesić said that marking the 150th anniversary is, among other things, an opportunity to remind ourselves of the facts characterizing today’s life in Croatia, a country with about three hundred villages that are still waiting for the introduction of electricity and with companies of knowledge of 21st century already looking into the next century. These great differences should be bridged, emphasized Mesić and invited all who can, he himself being one of them, who can support the leaders of prosperity in Croatia to do that. The secret of the success of the company Ericsson Nikola Tesla is in the top quality competencies of its employees and such a company deserves all support it can get, said Mesić. In return the company will be able to exercise even stronger support of the development of the community.

The meeting of the Croatian President and the President of Ericsson went in a very cordial atmosphere. Mesić and Svanberg met twice in 2004. During his tour of the Northern European countries the President Mesić visited Ericsson's headquarters in Stockholm, and in the spring of the same year Svanberg came to Croatia. The third meeting of the two presidents on the occasion of the Year of Nikola Tesla was again an opportunity to confirm that the Ericsson Nikola Tesla operates as a bridge of cooperation between Croatia and Sweden and as a role model of the efficient economic diplomacy.
