  • Agreement on cooperation between Ericsson Nikola Tesla and the Faculty of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and naval architecture of the University in Split
  • Ericsson Nikola Tesla unit in Split – driving force of technological and economic progress in the county

The key reason for this conference was signing the agreement on cooperation between Ericsson Nikola Tesla, the regional ICT leader and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FESB) of the University in Split, which is among major scientific institutions in Croatia. The aim of the cooperation is to strengthen the science and economy as the precondition for the prosperity.

The press conference was held in Ericsson Nikola Tesla premises in Split, and the press representatives were addressed by MSc Gordana Kovačević, the president of Ericsson Nikola Tesla d.d., Prof. DSc Tomislav Kilić the dean of FESB and Željko Kerum, the major of Split.

In her addressing the audience, MSc Gordana Kovačević, the president of Ericsson Nikola Tesla pointed out that the company managed to achieve the set goals, regardless of the demanding times, as the previous year was. Despite the unfavorable environment in the sense of economy, and the limited investments by operators, the company kept its financial stability and profitability, as well as it continued with the strong marketing and sales activities in all its markets. The investments into development projects and competencies were continued and the jobs preserved. And as of the income in 2009, out of the total HRK 1,400 million, the amount of HRK 423 millions came from the export of knowledge to Ericsson Corporation.

The key role in the knowledge export to Ericsson Corporation has the Institute of Telecommunications within Ericsson Nikola Tesla, having today some 600 highly educated employees. The considerable growth recorded, especially within the Research and Development Center in Split, is due to the top quality, reliability and cost efficiency. In 2009, this Centre had some 260 employees, the majority of which with degree in electrical engineering and computing science. The extension of its current responsibilities and being awarded the new ones has a strong point of support in the continuous competence development, and innovative approach of all employees in all business operations.

Ericsson Nikola Tesla and FESB have experienced a long-term cooperation in scientific and research activities, development and education. The new Cooperation Agreement will intensify the joint investments into scientific and research projects, concerning the information and communications technology and will strengthen the joint appearance both in the European and the world research area. This agreement will also strengthen the competitiveness of Croatia in the dynamic telecom world.

The complex areas in which the Research and Development Centre in Split operates, like the development of the solution for future multiservice mobile and fixed networks (UMTS, ‘all-IP’ for fixed telephony), pave the way for numerous possibilities with actual scientific and research projects achieved by synergy of the company and the faculty.  The examples of such cooperation are the projects, which may enable quick and efficient interconnection of different equipment and may achieve real savings, but also meet the safety standards.

Prof. DSc Tomislav Kilić, the dean of FESB, expressed his pleasure with such a valuable partnership, because it enables students to participate in the latest technological trends and it also creates jobs for future experts.  Željko Kerum, the major of Split, welcome the investment in science and competence as a strong drive for the development of the city and the region.

Showing her pleasure with the signed Agreement, MSc Gordana Kovačević stressed that: „Ericsson Nikola Tesla has recognized the need for strategic knowledge management and for setting relations between the economy and educational institutions, which are a must for the development of a modern society of knowledge, we all have aspirations for. We are well aware that such relations create the preconditions for future, not only of our company, but also of the Croatian society as a whole. This is also the way for Croatian citizens, especially the young ones, to be more active in the current communications trends“.
