New technologies for improved quality of life

Well attended, fifth in a row New Technology Day – DaNTe 2010, took place on Nov. 4 2010 in Rijeka City Hall, organized by the city of Rijeka and Croatian ICT association MIPRO.
A considerable contribution to the program, was given by Ericsson Nikola Tesla specialists, who presented topics on ICT solutions in traffic and municipal sector and in healthcare services, as well.

The event that attracted audience, was opened by Veljko Obersnel, MSc, the city major, and Vanja Smokvina, MSc, the principal of the information technology agency in the city of Rijeka, and prof. Petar Biljanović, DSc, the president of the MIORO Program Committee.

For quite a number of years Rijeka has continuously developing new projects, being aware that without collaboration with scientists the use modern technology in the most appropriate mode is not possible. Due to such an approach, Rijeka is a leader among Croatian cities as of application of new technologies in the public administration.  Therefore, a part of lectures read at the event, related to recent ICT projects that contributed to the traffic regulation in Rijeka, and to the transparency of city administration activities.
Two lecturers coming from FER, the faculty at the University of Zagreb, attempted to make those who are not ICT specialists, familiar with the so called consumer programming. The good illustration of this project quality is the fact, that even Google expressed its interest in it.

Kristijan Meić, a specialist coming form Ericsson Nikola Tesla, talked of M2M (machine-to-machine) communications as the basis for ICT solutions in traffic and a municipal sector. His colleague, from the same company, Goran Streny presented the advanced integrated hospital solutions as a part of the total informatization of the healthcare system. His lecture pointed out the challenges of hospital information system markets.  The final lecture was on stereotaxsic robotic radio-surgery, and the vivid discussions at the round table confirmed that eHealth, in the wide sense, is one of the topics of a great potential for interdisciplinary cooperation and further development, since improvements in the given area may be of direct impact to the satisfaction of the population as a whole.

As seen by the majority of participants, this event was, the best DaNTe, so far. It was also an excellent opportunity to exchange of experience in applying new technologies, all focused to improve efficiency of the public administration and improvement of the quality of life in all segments of society.
