Huge natural disasters, like the earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday Jan. 15, or, the ones at the local community level, like it is with the current flood in Lika region, in Neretva valley and some other parts of Croatia, always result in long term consequences for inhabitants. Such natural disasters are always the occasion for actual help both by the global and local levels.
In that sense, within the frame of its Response organization Ericsson supports the aid relief work in earthquake-stricken Haiti by sending telecom equipment (Mini GSM system and telephones to enable mobile communication in the area) and telecom experts-volunteers at the site.
The UN has requested that Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) deploy its Ericsson Response organization to aid relief work in disaster-stricken Haiti. Personnel and equipment will arrive in Haiti using UN transportation. In 2009, Ericsson Response supported relief work in Congo, Sudan, Indonesia and Philippines. Ericsson Response was formed in 2000 and is the result of a conviction in Ericsson that telecommunication expertise is needed during times of disaster and has formed partnerships with international organizations such as the UN.
Along with such activities at the global level, Ericsson Nikola Tesla, the Croatian company operating within the Ericsson Group, in cooperation with the Croatian Red Cross Organization, decided to support to relieve work in flood-stricken Neretva valley and Lika region. According to experts in Red Cross teams at the spot, the water is retrieving gradually, so it is necessary to enable the normal life within the shortest period of time, which among other things means the drying of the premises that were flooded.
In this sense Ericsson Nikola Tesla supported Red Cross by providing large number of drying units and aggregates to power supply the given units, since due to mains failure no regular power supply has been provided yet. Donated drying units and aggregates will be immediately sent to the flood-stricken areas. The Red Cross Organization will be the permanent holder of the given equipment, which means it will be used in future in similar circumstances.
